If you want to be the best, you have to put yourself to the test against the rest. And this is exactly what Cantina Kurtatsch did. Unusually for South Tirol, they produce a Merlot-dominated Bordeaux blend, Tres, (yup, as the name suggests, there are two other Bordeaux varieties alongside the Merlot) and this was the revelation of the third (not consecutive) vintage (2018) versus the likes of Chateaux Angelus and Vieux Certan as well as Tuscan greats Redigaffi Tua Rita and Galatrina Petrolo. The setting in scene was magnificent with young artist, Carmen Maria Alber revealing the secrets and techniques behind her label creation in the limesone-walled barrique cellar. And the result? I have to admit Angelus was my favourite, but Tres is definitely up there.
