Wine of the moment

Going French in Spain

Instead of the impenetrable tangle of indigenous varieties, this small 6 ha family winery (Son Prim) on the Pla de Mallorca plain in the middle of the island of Palma, has gone French. Who would expect to find a Blanc de Merlot (with an extraordinary 15.5% abv!) made by a winemaker from Uruguay on the holiday isle beloved by Germans and Brits alike. My favourite wine was the vibrant „Son Prim Cup“ 2019, a clever blend of 60% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Syrah (latest addition to the French stable). Richly red-fruited with cranberries, cherries, cardamom, cinnamon and white pepper on the nose, spicy fruit on the palate balanced by crunchy yet well-integrated tannins.
