Golden Oldies

Alsace rocks: despite the common belief that Gewürztraminer should be drunk young, a tasting of this highly aromatic grape variety in Alsace shows just how beautifully it can age thanks to its high natural tannins. Jean-Frédéric Hugel opened up a magnum of 1953 Gewürztraminer which was umami savoury with Parmesan biscuit notes and a creamy, honeyed palate and orange peel finish. And at the oldest Confrérie in France, de Sainte-Etienne, some more golden oldies from the 1998, 1988 and 1971 vintages showed tangerine, gingerbread and honey characters. The Confrérie’s motto also has to be applauded: „you cannot belong to the Confrérie de Saint-Etienne if you don’t like having fun, good food and Alsace wine“. Let’s rock and roll…..
